This is a great post, Tyler. I think that what you tweet is largely based on the market you're in. Of course if you're in the IM/blogging world, you don't want to be tweeting random stuff about your personal life that does nothing for building your brand, traffic, or exposure. I think the ones that are making those mindless tweets are regular folk and teenagers, in which case is to be expected, especially if they have no true purpose for their twitter account,.

This is a good guide for those just getting started with online marketing through social media. It'll help them make the switch from personal tweeting to business tweeting with a purpose.

Hi Tyler,

I'm not big on rules for social media, but I'd say the best guideline is to think about how you talk in a conversation. If self-centeredness gets you nowhere in face-to-face discussions, why would it work with social media?
