This was an interesting read, David.

Getting to know your users needs and problems, while creating segments of your audience based on specific metrics, and finally sending targeted communications, (even automated) are all stages of the sales funnel.

Email marketing is the cheaper and most powerful weapon, I think.

Social media channels are still undervalued by small business, don't you think so, David?

Some small businesses jumped into social media without having their list building process in place. That is a waste of good traffic and effort. I've been trying to get them to understand they need to integrate social and email marketing for years. Wrote this in 2010 http://www.adotas.com/2010/08/email-social-media-the-horse-goes-in-front/

To me, it's the type of marketing you need to do, which depends on your product, your audience and even on audience segments. Email marketing is good for wearing down people on your list. But social media is better for word-of-mouth - which is still a massively powerful form of marketing.
