According to KnowEm.com, there are over 550 social networking sites. Do you have a social media strategy to decide which sites to join and be active on?

Sherryl: KnowEm is a great tool to cover the bases and to protect your brand name in an efficient way. The thing is that if you have reserved your username on several sites, you should be able to take time to interact on them.

The answer depends on how actively you can participate in the social networks you have joined. Joining number of social networks for the sake of joining and getting "friends" is not really going to help you if you are not prepared to engage in real dialog and conversation with them.

I would rather join fewer networks and participate more than other way round. Having said that Facebook and Twitter still remain the big kahunas. Outside of that you should consider joining niche social network that focuses on your industry.

Thanks so much for weighing in on this and leaving a comment on my blog. I was hoping to foster a discussion on this topic. There are definitely two points of view (at least) on this.

I often use my KnowEm link http://knowem.com/lyceum during my workshops and training sessions on social media in order to show the vast amount of new media sites out there in cyberspace! ;) At the same time I give the advise to concentrate on a few sites to start with. Where are your potential customers on the net?

I've used KnowEm in my social media classes too. It's a great service. I believe in concentrating on a few site too but I still advocate creating a profile on multiple sites mainly to reserve your username but at the same time, people may find you there.

I like to reserve my username anytime there is a new social network available but I've never joined too many of them because I only focuses with few that gives me quite good result such as Bizsugar and JustRetweet.com which works with twitter.

Thanks for sharing

Someone from KnowEm replied in the comments and he said that there are actually thousands of sites in their database. Good luck finding some that might be a good fit for you. You'll find plenty of choices.
