Jesse - Excellent tips on social media. I would also say that staying engaged with customers is very important for small business. Just establishing profile on Facebook and Twitter is not going to make you successful. You need to send time on a regular basis "talking" to customers, answering questions and providing useful information to them.

Local businesses do under utilize the power of social media. Personally, if a local business in my town doesn't have a social media presence, well, I'll definitely choose one with a great active fanpage. Since I feel that they would be more responsive and would offer great customer service.
