Let's face it. Starting and operating a small business can be a huge challenge. There are many demands on your time, talent and creativity, and, while small business owners rightly have a reputation for wearing many hats effectively, there are times an outside perspective can help with feedback on issues you could not have seen yourself. That's where a small business coach comes in, and, in this post, John Jantsch looks at three reasons they are invaluable.

Vedran: I agree. I have been "burned" by so-called "business developers," promising all kind of stuff. I recommend you to read John Jantsch's book, The Referral Engine, for a sound approach on how to handle business contacts.

Could you contrast a business coach with a business mentor?

Hi Adam,

This is good advice for any product or service, I think. One of the really difficult parts of running a business can be that everyone tells you about things you MUST do to succeed. But, just as you do with your personal spending, it's important to make decisions for yourself about what expenditures are really needed. It's generally a good rule of thumb to have a clear idea of why you need the product or service you are thinking about buying and how it will improve your business. And, definitely, of course, you should make sure what you're buying will really do what it says.

Some good points about biz coaches in this post. But the "coaching" industry has become saturated with providers- many of whom are not qualified to offer the assistance they are advertising. Use your due diligience: check their backgrounds, stay away from those who make outlandish claims they can't verify.

Also, make sure you are really clear about what you want from your coaching experience *before* you start your search.

Adam, I basically came here to say this - staying away from the businesses coaches who say they will transform your business from $xx,xxx/year to $xxx, xxx+ will save you a lot of money, headaches and stress. You just have to be careful!
