English may be the international language of business, but the savvy global business traveler knows that even a basic knowledge of the local language can go a long way in ensuring business success overseas. Although some people who are learning a language for business reasons do opt for classroom training, many others find it difficult to go to regularly scheduled classes or discover that these programs are not targeted to the business person.

Martin - I think that's because Hungarian & Finnish are from a separate language family. i.e. They're not from the Indo-European family of root words like so many languages. They're their own group: Finno-Ugrian. (This is some trivia I picked up researching Migration Period & Viking swords over the last 15 years.) You might call them Svards (sorry, no umlaut available).

I started to learn English in third grade (at age 9). I have studied German for six years, but I haven't practiced for a long time. I had Spanish for one year, but don't remember it. I will start to study Interlingua again.

I stayed in Hungary for three months and concluded that it probably is one of the most difficult languages in the world. Swedish is piece of cake compared with the language from the Magyar country! ;)

Excellent article Ajay!

When I immigrated to israel 15 years ago, I had to learn 3 new languages, Hebrew, Arabic and Russian (There are over a million immigrants here from Russia now.) Learning these languages has given me a niche here in many markets. Wherever someone goes, as your article states, you have to learn the language.
