I can add one to your list: How about getting either a webcam for the car or a stand to mount a camera, whether a flipcam or something better, and do either a recorded vlog or a live webcast from your car, as you're driving. You don't have to maintain eye contact for it to be entertaining. I've seen a few people do this. What other interesting ideas can people come up with?

Great ideas James. I once learnt Spanish basics on an hour long commute in the car. I have often read or studied during tube or train commutes too. Now I work from home but commute (from my shower) via a dog walk through the fields. Half the time I spend just enjoying the silence and nature then I start planning my day ahead or solve problems as you have suggested above. Whatever the commute it is great to use it productively.
