Speaking top your title, the proper name is indeed "news release". You release news - not the press. In Russia, they might need a press release, but over here the press is already free. And so are the broadcast media (which I assume would also be sent the "press" release, even if "press' refers specifically to print.

Yeah, that's an often debated term. Interesting thing about small businesses, research shows small business owners prefer the words "press release" over "news release." Why? News release sounds like it's harder. This is important if you are trying to reach small businesses in search. Besides, there are plenty of broadcast journalists that belong to the National Press Club. There are probably better arguments to be had.

Heather: thanks so much! It makes me crazy to say that releases aren't used any more when, in fact, no matter how you get the attention of a journalist, they're ultimately going to need specific information to write the story. Typically the information they need is exactly what you would write in a press release.
