Tone does so much in every kind of conversation! You can see that when you hear two foreigners speak to each other, even if you don't understand what they say, you can tell when they are arguing and you start to feel uncomfortable without understanding the content!

Great article Marsha! Now that a lot of our opinions and messages are given through writing (i.e. blogs, articles, comments), many people tend to forget that even through written content, a tone still exists. And just like you say in your example, "If you sound really superior, like a college professor preaching on his worst pet peeves, chances are that you won’t connect with your audience," this kind of tone comes out in both a live interview and writing so content creators have to be careful of tone through many different mediums.
