It seems so simple doesn't it but so many people miss it.
It's great having a loads of followers but do you have an audience.
The more social the internet becomes the more online businesses will have no choice but to "get this" otherwise they will sink.

Yes, going where your audience (and your potential customer base) hangs out is so important. This is why it's so pointless when people talk about the size of a social network. The fact is, if the customers who would tend to appreciate your product aren't there, you're wasting your time. A smaller channel much more attuned to your brand would probably help you much more. The thing is, as you say, it isn't always obvious where your audience is immediately. That's why it can take some experimentation to find them.
