What is Image Aspect Ratio and Why It Matters… A Lot!

First, what is image aspect ratio? Here’s a good definition from Wikipedia…

“The aspect ratio of an image describes the proportional relationship between its width and its height. It is commonly expressed as two numbers separated by a colon, as in 16:9.” – Wikipedia

Aspect Ratio through the Eyes of Your HD TV

Video deals a lot with aspect ratio. If you have a nice flat screen HDTV, you’ll be familiar with this.

You’ll see display options like 4:3 or 16:9. You can think of these as 4×3 inches or 16×9 inches if that helps.

Great explanation, Jon! The thing that bothers me the most with that stuff is when people take videos with their iPhones holding it vertically instead of horizontally (so you get that 16:9 ratio) instead of a really tall video. Drives me nuts!
