I've seen Chris's discussion on this before and agree fully. While I'm a big proponent of social networks, I think you've got to look at the value of each. For bloggers or anyone promoting a Website, that means carefully monitoring whether enough people from a particular community are actually visiting your Website or whether there are any outside referrals you can trace to your membership. This is not to say that your participation in social networks should be limited to plugging your other online sites, but certainly you would hope that anyone interested enough in joining your group would also want to check out what you're up to elsewhere on the Web. Tools like Google Analytics make it easier than ever to see where your visitors are coming from and hence which social networks are giving you results.
