Despite overwhelming support for the idea that Google’s decision was based on authorship photos’ impact on the CTR of paid search ads, some naysayers insisted that this couldn’t be the case.

The meaning of the acronym was spelled out in the smoking gun image! My eyes didn't catch it! ;)

It looks like Google is opening up for a company to enter the ad market place, with a better mousetrap, sooner or later. Google said from the beginning that the search result was the main thing, now it is ad revenue... And as you know, I am all for revenue, but it looks like a #Sharkonomics moment could come in say 5-10 years time: "Do you remember when you used Google in order to find something?" Do you remember AltaVista? ;)

What is CTR standing for? ;)

It stands for "Click Through Rate", which is the % of people that click on your PPC advert in relation to how many times it was displayed. When Google was showing images for authors in the organic SERPS (search engine results page), click through rates fell on the paid adverts Google displayed (that's the theory and somewhat proven by this article) so they removed images to restore higher CTR's for the paid ads, which is Google's #1 source of revenue.
