There are actually potentially valid tactical SEO reasons for doing it at times too (although more often not).
In the vast majority of cases though, the advice in the article is spot on. The blog is the main engine of interesting and link worthy content on most business sites in particular and if there are links and social mentions to be gained, you want that credit going to your main site.
