Very true. Quite a lot of people can get someone 5,000 visitors a day by next Tuesday but whether those visitors will meet the needs of the client is another question entirely. You mention taking the easy way out and foregoing educating the client on value. This is so true.

I have a lot of sympathy for the client in trying to make this choice. It really isn't easy.

Hi Alastair,

I think metrics are important in any business but the truth is that if someone out there had a system that could absolutely guarantee you success at a certain level within a certain time frame no matter what your business everyone would know it by now. I really don't blame customers for this but instead every business owner who, when talking to a client, foregoes education about the value they provide and takes the easy way out to get a sale. (Yes, we can get you 5,000 visitors a day by next Tuesday no matter what your blog is about.) Of course, when the unrealistic goal can't be met, not only has one business owner's reputation been sullied but the client's expectations have now been so confused that the chances of anyone else delivering an acceptable and legitimate result become remote.
