Here's a provocative look at the shrinking real estate Google devotes to organic search. As the author Aaron Harris points out, it gets worse as Google's carousel is implemented. Mobile is particularly brutal.

David: Thanks for informing us about the development of the carousel view. What could the next step be, more interactive features with augmented reality tools like Google Glasses?

David: Thanks for the input. Do you think that the carousel view was developed mainly for the mobile devices in mind?

I believe it started as a view for tablets. Recently moved to desktops, and rolled out to many more keywords/phrases. Here's a great digest of keywords found to trigger the carousel view. http://blumenthals.com/blog/2013/06/29/keywords-that-trigger-the-local-carousel-a-compilation/

David: Thanks for the information. I haven't seen that kind of feature yet. It looks pretty cool. Don't know about the black background with white text, though! ;) Is this Google's way of trying to compete with Yelp and Foursquare?

I think it is. Also with users looking for more info at a quicker pace, it provides easily digestible content (images, ratings, review counts). These are pieces of content that can be communicated to the user without forcing them to sift through lots of text.

David Foertsch: What is carousel view? Is it that you could watch content by scrolling around the material as a carousel going round and round? I will check out the piece on Search Engine Watch. Thanks for adding material on BizSugar and spreading the good word!

Thanks! Not sure what you're seeing abroad, in the US we're seeing local results on certain hospitality keywords like restaurant/hotel/bar, etc. that look considerably different from the traditional organic search results. See this article below, you'll notice the large horizontal "carousel" at the top that scrolls left to right.

I have been saying this for some time, Google is not so focus on organic search and displaying the real results. The good thing is that you test out alternatives to Google, e.g., Bing, DuckDuckGo, etc.

Aaron Harris has done a great job on highlighting the dilemma when you are searching on small device like a mobile phone and how much you must scroll down / flip pages before you find organic results.

The small form factor of a mobile phone is a real concern. Interestingly though, maybe the carousel view on tablets will ultimately increase actions taken due to its visual nature. Of course, not every industry type will be affected by the carousel.

Getting ready to share a Search Engine Watch retort to Harris's blog. Here's the direct URL, it should be up on BizSugar later today. http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2280781/Reality-Check-Google-Isnt-Killing-Organic-Search
