These are some awesome insights on hiring Susan!

The most critical piece of information you can get from someone you’re thinking of hiring is their behavior patterns surrounding their previous jobs.

You want to interview them in depth about each of the jobs they’ve had, going all the way back to their first job and ask questions like, “What were your expectations going into the role? How did the role meet your expectations?” ask about the projects they worked on, what succeeded and what failed, and then MOST IMPORTANTLY ask, “When I talk to your boss from this job, and I ask them what your biggest strengths and weakness were, what are they going to tell me?”

You can call this “the promise of or the threat of reference check”. This question acts as a truth serum that jolts people out of their B.S. storytelling if that’s what they’re engaged in, and gets you to what really happened in their previous positions.

You also want to ask the candidates why they left each of their jobs.

You want to be seeking out the red flags that this person blames other people for their problems or that they’re hard to work with.

When you do this, PATTERNS WILL EMERGE. Top grade talent has awesome patterns and they have great relationships with their former bosses so they’re only too happy to set up a conversation between the two of you. The train wreck employees will have left waste and ruin in their past and so they fear you digging into it.

Thank you Susan for pointing out the red flags to look for here and for guiding me to the SEO Moz guide - I like those guys! :)
