The point about not needing a degree in journalism is key, I believe. Admittedly, I'm a little biased (having done History), but when assessing a writer you should judge them based on their adaptability and the work you've seen by them. Failing that (for example, if you're going for a fresh face in the writing scene), ask for a sample or employ them on a trial to test their mettle.
