Organizers are calling Small Business Saturday, the day set aside at the beginning of the holiday shopping season to promote small businesses, an overwhelming success. U.S. consumers spent more than projected, an estimated $5.5 billion, with independent merchants, according to the National Federation of Independent Business and American Express.
