Sound waves from an earthquake travel at unimaginable speed. I guess water must slow it down, cause the tsunami wave, emanating from an earthquake travel at the speed of a jet plane. Good luck running that fast.

Right - the speed of sound in air is Much slower than in a solid like under ground. 768 mph is the speed of sound in the air at sea level - it's 660 mph at 30,000 feet.

The local news is all over it now (I don't have cable, so I had to wait for the 5:00pm news). It's the strongest earthquake in the eastern US since 1897 - over 100 years - 5.8 on the Richter scale. Most recent ones were around 4.0/4.2. I think the earlier one I felt was March or April 1981, not 1980 (based on where I lived, and the still bare trees).

I'm guessing when the floor rumbled (as she sunned herself in the bedroom window), she opened one eye about 1/16", twitched an ear, and thought: "Is this worth getting up out of a comfortable nap...naw, earthquake-shmerthquake."

If it officially occurred at 1:51 pm Eastern, it took 2 minutes for the seismic waves to reach NE Ohio some 291 miles away - over 8,700 mph (more than 11 times the speed of sound at sea level, Mach 1, which is 760 mph). Mach 11.5 - could I out-run it if I had lotsa coffee??

Yoni, I felt a rumble at 1:53 pm Eastern time, in NE Ohio just outside of Akron - I wrote it on my log. I felt one in 1980 - it woke me up on a Sunday morning. Today's felt like a rumbling for quite a few seconds - my monitor was bouncing a little. My 'office', a flimsy laptop table sandwiched in between tons of junk compiled over the many years, has my monitor & keyboard on it. If I bump it, it rumbles then, too - except, my hands were off when it rumbled this afternoon. I was sure it was an earthquake, but didn't have the TV on.
