It should also be kept in mind that consulting and outsourcing has changed the nature of emplyment itself. Also, the definition of "unemployed" has changed a lot over the years... and that can sometimes fudge up surveys depending on who's collecting the data.

As the numbers show, what's needed is a ground swell of new entrepreneurial activity. Existing companies, even those slowly recovering, will never be able to reabsorb the huge number of unemployed. And, of course, as Duncan points out, the existing numbers probably don't include "discouraged workers" who have fallen off the unemployment rolls and have given up on finding work. Obviously temporary hires of census workers should not be considered in any kind of recovery trend.

Very Informative Charts! I've always been mystified by news reports of unemployment figures - they only include announced layoffs & business closings, and people officially on government unemployment benefits. Anyone out of work who's not on unemployment doesn't count in the statistics - that's a HUGE number of unfortunate people not being counted.
