Thanks for contributing -- and thanks for sharing this post from Benjamin Brandal. It certainly takes an interesting look at content marketing. But allow me to take a contrarian view.
Creating content that will draw visitors, keep them coming back and build community involves a hugely important thing -- QUALITY CONTENT. Yes, it seems obvious, but consider this.
While marketing research is certainly important, focusing on keywords before content -- the thing that will actually keep your readers coming back -- can encourage the development of content that is more for search engines than for humans.
Also remember that keyword tends can be fleeting while creating content that a small group of passionate readers will be willing to share, means focusing on what happens AFTER your reader reaches the page.
Keywords and SEO are important. Just be sure a cart-before-the-horse mentality doesn't lead you to create content only Google could love -- but no one else.

Thanks for commenting here -- I agree with you totally.
Of course, you'll find unoptimized content on page 1 for great keywords, but I think it's because (often times) that it's from a domain with high authority.
Finding your audience's points of interest is a great thing, both for SEO and just to make sure you're writing something that resonates.
But, of course, you could fall into the trap of writing for SEO entirely, which no one wants!
