It has been a few years since social media became popular. I wouldn't say mainstream since a huge number of companies haven't gotten started yet. Another good portion have recently acknowledged its importance and are taking action at the moment. When it comes to their first steps, the mistakes don't differ much from those brands and companies that have started using social networks a while ago. It consists on a race for followers, fans... eyeballs.

Thanks a lot Heather. This point sounds like a super obvious one, but so many companies invest budgets on accomplishing "reach" only, that they forget the most important part is what happens after it :)

Hi Fred,

Number 6 is so important: "When prospects and customers do talk to you (big milestone!) be there to answer and provide helpful information!" It's hard enough to build social engagement with visitors. Ignoring them once you've got their attention is a really bad idea.
