As a business owner, how much market research did you conduct before starting your business? What about when launching a new product or service?

I find Google's consumer surveys very useful and awesome. I plan to use one of their templates with my start-up site Chatterclub, but I cannot afford it at the moment, but really think Google is on point with these surveys and I love their templates.

Good luck with your new business. Google Consumer Surveys is probably the most affordable market research available. While it's not perfect, it'll give you enough data to keep you on the right track. Also check out Survey Monkey, it's free

Gary: Could you compare and contrast Google's survey tool with other providers?

Google Consumer Surveys is a new form of "self serve" market research platform directed to the business owner and marketing agency. As far as I know, there isn't anything that does exactly what Google Consumer Surveys does. From my own experience, what i've used in the past are:

Survey Monkey. You can create your own surveys, though you will need to have your own database of people to send the survey to. Surveymonkey.com

Google Adwords. I generally use this when testing a new market or product to gauge consumer interest and to test copy. You can't aggregate data the way Google Surveys does, but you can do some good A/B testing to see what people prefer.

Gary,

Marketing research can be really challenging for small companies just starting out with limited resources, but some of the tools made available at very low cost or free in recent years has really been changing this. Thanks for sharing at least one of these with the BizSugar community. Very cool!
