There's plenty of talk about the importance of collecting data for your marketing efforts. But a recent survey by research firm Gartner suggests most companies are still failing to effectively mine that data for the marketing information they need. The reason, says management leader and entrepreneur Dana Love, is that many marketers still lack the clear understanding of analytics needed to make the data they are collecting more helpful in their efforts.

Data driven marketing is a relatively new phenomenon. Marketers traditionally have not been used to making decisions based on analytical data and have not been accountable in terms of ROI. That is one of the reasons contributing to dearth of skilled professionals. There is also a deluge of data coming from large number of sources some of which is in the form (unstructured) that is not easy to analyze. I am optimistic that given time this will bring out deep insights and help marketers with better decisions.
