You probably think you have the basics covered.

You’ve learned how to use WordPress and you’ve played around with your blog’s theme and found one you like.

You have several blog posts published and every time you put out a new post, you think, this is the one that will generate traffic, engagement, and social shares.

But, something isn’t right. Somewhere deep down you’re thinking – even though you’re dotting all the i’s and crossing all the t’s – something isn’t clicking.

You’ve been blogging for a while now without much success.

No one is coming to your blog. No one cares about your content. No one likes what you wrote.

You may not realize it, but you’re probably pushing your readers away from your site."

Adam: My comment is based on a philosophical idea, if you don't write for your own joy and create of content you are not yourself interested in, that wouldn't work in the long run, according to my view.

I want to build some kind of loyal audience over time, step by step, by the word-of-mouth approach and referral marketing.

I know and I don't disagree.

What I meant was that some start off with content that isn't audience centric and then continue using that approach, which is great for personal enjoyment but it won't help to build an audience outside of close friends/family.

But, it's possible to write content that you enjoy writing and your audience will find useful and/or entertaining. The point where these two elements meet is when the magic really starts to happen.

I would debate that you should start out with writing for yourself. If not, you will be tired of blogging in the long run...

Good point, Martin.

I've seen people start out that way and stick to it because it's become more of a habit.

For purely audience building purposes, writing for your audience is essential.
