I am a big proponent of networking and referrals for professionals, from generating referrals from your clients and contacts, to getting involved in formal and organized networking groups.
What I can’t figure out is...

I agree with the two way street attitude. I recently joined a BNI chapter in Gothenburg, Sweden. Before I could have the opportunity to do my presentation (10 minutes), I had to attend a membership success training event.
Have you read John Jantsch's book, The Referral Engine?
