You have elegantly described the types of difficult employees managers and business owners have to deal with. It is not easy to deal with them and firing them right away may not be an option for everyone.

I recommend 4-step approach to deal with various categories of difficult employees 1) Communicate 2) Coax 3) Confront and 4) Kick out. You should try reconciliatory approach and confront only after they do not work resulting in eventual firing.

One reason dealing with "difficult" people is a challenge is that you can't "fix" something that's perceived as a character flaw, whether it's ego or laziness or stubbornness or selfishness or anything else. But you can work on correcting disruptive or negative behavior and that can be well worthwhile.
