I feel this way with some mixed feedback too, but I'm not quite sure what a better alternative might be. Certainly concerns must be expressed. Perhaps expressing a concern before a compliment would be a better move. Waiting to comment on a weakness in a separate communication would seem to make things even worse without some positives to balance it out.
