I was in my mid-30's - and completely oblivious to guile - when a young co-worker demonstrated his "technique" for looking busy when he heard approaching footsteps: he grabbed a pen & pretended to be lost in reading by the time they walked in the room. I had to laugh - stuff like this never occurred to me.
