It is hard to overestimate this aspect of Japanese culture, particularly since it differs so completely from the experience of most Westerners. For a great many generations, the Japanese have had strength in groups and in collective decision-making.

It sounds like the Japanese workplace takes quite a bit of navigation for Westerners. I'd love to hear how Western women fare in Japanese companies, since they seem to have such hierarchies and rigidity inherent in their corporate structures. Hmmm...
