Employers conduct background checks for several reasons. Background checks help determine whether the applicant is a good fit for the position – critical given the enormous direct and indirect cost associated with “bad hires”. Secondly, it serves to mitigate the “negligent hiring” liability exposure – by reducing the likelihood of a claim and demonstrating reasonable care, should one occur.
