Whatever you try to do in life that involves other people will almost certainly entail some kind of compromise. The White House recently sent me a video about finding a common ground. Obviously because of the current stand off in the debt ceiling talks. However, finding a way forward is something that applies to all of us no matter what we are trying to do.

Hello Catarina,

I think compromise is necessary in business and politics like it is in personal life! One cannot have everything one wants with no regard to the others around him! After all, business is done with and for other people, people who have feelings, hopes, dreams and aspirations just like you have, if you neglect everyone to promote yourself, you will fail.

Let's also not forget Neville Chamberlain's "Peace in Our Time" speech after appeasement of /compromise with the Nazis.

He asked Hitler "Would you like peace?" Hitler responded, "Sure, I'd like a 'piece' of Poland, a 'piece' of France, a 'piece' of..."

Last one: The Yalta Conference (1945) where rather than go to war following WWII, FDR and "Uncle Joe" as he used to call Stalin, decided to carve up Europe like a turkey being readied for Thanksgiving Dinner. Sometimes it's better to fight than compromise.

Catarina,

Being flexible is a virtue, but we must always remember that there is a fine line between compromise and selling-out.

George Bush Sr. was initially willing to "talk things out" with Saddam, but he also drew the proverbial and not-so-proverbial line in the sand. He said very publicly, "You cross this and you're gonna get a good ass-whoopin'.

We can all give and take, but we must also have those things dictated by our principles, conscience and beliefs where we draw a line in the sand and refuse to budge. It's what allows us to maintain our integrity.

Yoni

Stalin and FDR really got along very well together. So well actually that Stalin was miserale when Truman took over and sincerely missed Roosevelt:-) Stalin really knew how to play FDR to get what he want. He didn't compromise, he manipulated.
