Diversity is everything. Anchor text. Types of links (text, image, etc.) Types of linking pages (blog posts, blog comments, forums, resource lists, social media, etc.) The bottom line, make it natural. Don't go out and spend a day just commenting on blogs and call that your link-building for the month, even if you have identified that as the best way to draw the kind of traffic you want to your site.
