Just because you have what you feel is a great idea...doesn't mean that this idea of yours can be franchised. Make sense? This blog post goes into this topic in a not-so-gentle way. But, it's the truth.

Ha! Ha! Trying to tell us something, Joel? Anyway, what's interesting here is that much of the advice on beginning a franchise seems opposite to the kind of tips you often hear about starting an individual business, namely, the idea of a niche market which it seems may work better for an individual business model...until things are more developed. But I'm wondering if that isn't the real problem here. It seems to me most people with the ambition to launch a franchise would be better off running an individual or several of these businesses first to shake out the problems and fully develop the business model. Data from day to day operations would be the best marketing research available telling future operators exactly what to expect and making it much easier to write an effective operating manual, just as Starbucks started as a small roaster and cafe.
