Before writing a succession plan off as just another tough decision, consider this: While 81 percent of family owned businesses want the business to stay in the family, studies have shown that without a succession plan in place, 70 percent of family businesses don’t survive to the second generation.

Planning for succession is probably something most business owners don't want to think about, but having built a successful business, it's nice to know that business will live on (assuming, of course, there is someone who wants to carry on the tradition.) Planning for the business's survival once you're out of the picture, is one easy way to assure this.
