Lenovo Partners with Japanese Pharma to Boost Sustainability Goals Through CO2 Offset Services

Share

For small businesses aiming to enhance their sustainability efforts while improving operational efficiency, the recent collaboration between TS Alfresa Corporation and Lenovo presents a compelling case. This partnership emphasizes how combining technology upgrades with carbon offset initiatives can help companies achieve greener practices without compromising performance.

TS Alfresa, a Japanese pharmaceutical wholesaler based in Hiroshima, has made sustainability a centerpiece of its mission. As part of its broader ambitions, the company aims to reduce CO2 emissions to near-zero by fiscal year 2050, aligning with the goals of its parent organization, Alfresa Holdings. This commitment is not just about compliance; it’s about playing a strategic role in the health and medical infrastructure for a region of approximately seven million people.

Recognizing the need for improvement, TS Alfresa has been taking significant steps. After transitioning their delivery fleet to electric vehicles and targeting a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions by the end of fiscal year 2030, the organization acknowledged that modernizing its IT infrastructure presented an additional layer of opportunity. “We have a goal to address social and environmental issues, from waste to the supply chain, in the medical and healthcare industry to help contribute to a more sustainable society,” said Mr. Shinji Sawai, Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer at TS Alfresa.

To support this goal, the company recently updated its fleet of employee devices, opting for Lenovo’s ThinkPad and ThinkCentre product lines. The decision came partly due to the rising demand for reliable technology that supports remote working dynamics. With the increases in telecommuting, employees needed devices capable of seamless operation for video conferencing and collaboration. This transition included the rollout of 620 ThinkPad L14 Gen 4 laptops, 505 ThinkPad L15 Gen 4 laptops, and 15 ThinkCentre M75q Tiny PCs, powered by AMD Ryzen processors.

"The high-quality design of the Lenovo devices was one of the reasons behind our choice. Lenovo ThinkPad laptops are sleek and user-friendly, which has a positive impact on employee engagement,” commented Kenichi Nakata, Manager of the IT Planning Department at TS Alfresa. Integration of features such as Dolby Audio for improved communication and fingerprint scanners for security further enhances the user experience.

Importantly, this technology upgrade dovetails with TS Alfresa’s sustainability goals through the use of Lenovo’s CO2 Offset Services. By calculating estimated emissions over the entire lifecycle of the devices—from manufacturing to end-of-life recycling—Lenovo assists businesses in offsetting their carbon footprint. Utilizing the services means TS Alfresa can purchase carbon credits that support verified environmental initiatives, including forest conservation and renewable energy.

“CIOs are increasingly focused on delivering business performance and sustainability progress in parallel,” said John Stamer, Vice President and General Manager, Global Product and Sustainability Services at Lenovo. This highlights the dual focus of small businesses: enhancing operational capabilities while committing to environmental stewardship.

The implications for small business owners are significant. By investing in technology that helps achieve sustainability goals, businesses not only address pressing environmental concerns but also elevate their brand reputation. As seen in the data from TS Alfresa, the rollout of 1,140 devices paired with CO2 offset capabilities addressed approximately 144 tons of estimated emissions. Over the devices’ lifecycle, the company anticipates this will cover roughly 577.5 tons of CO2 emissions. The positive impacts can be equated to significant environmental milestones, such as the emissions from driving 366,705 miles in an average gasoline-powered vehicle.

Nevertheless, implementing such initiatives can present challenges. While the benefits are clear, small business owners should consider the upfront costs linked to modernizing technology and the complexity of reliably measuring sustainability outcomes. Close monitoring and robust data tracking will be essential to ensure that the intended results are achieved.

As awareness of climate issues grows, taking action is becoming a vital aspect of corporate responsibility that customers and partners increasingly value. By leveraging Lenovo’s offerings, TS Alfresa has strengthened its commitment to sustainability, a model that could inspire smaller enterprises to embed environmental initiatives within their operational frameworks.
